Written by contributing blogger, Christine Martin.CID’s My Roots map collection have been a favorite for some time. The colors, design, and sweet sticker to pinpoint where our hearts lie are enough reasons to add these prints to our home decor. There’s another reason too. A recent NY Times article has brought attention to the idea that discovering and honoring the family narrative goes a long way in the healthy development of children. Author, Bruce Feiler, uncovers studies by Dr. Marshall Duke that indicate the following: The more children knew about their family’s history, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned. Children who have the most...
{thoughts from a travel journal} Each Tuesday this month, we have featured pieces of Rebecca's trip with her family to Chiapas, Mexico. From visiting the Melel Xojobal organization to sharing a new experience with her boys, these entries illustrate the empathy, compassion, and hope you have helped create through your support. In an earlier post I talked a bit about what I hoped my children would retain from our trip to Chiapas, particularily how they'd feel interacting with children their age with very different life stories. In the end, I know that I am truly blessed with this opportunity to serve the greater good through the donation of 10% CID and FWM proceeds. In turn, my children will...
Written by contributing blogger, Christine Martin. One wonderful way kids begin to express themselves as creative individuals is through art. Valuing their creations by hanging their work encourages and supports their development. If you have a child who comes home with bundles of art pieces or likes to spend time at the table drawing, finding space for all their work in a tasteful way can be a challenge. Here are some ways to manage this: *have an art folder and ask your child to pick up to 5 art pieces to hang; change them monthly *have a "masterpiece" frame or area for your child to select their favorite piece *have a list of family or friends your child can gift their work...
{thoughts from a travel journal} A few months ago, Rebecca of CID and FWM took a trip with her family to Mexico. Their wish to experience how the companies' donations assist the Melel Xojobal Organization was exceeded by much more. Not only was their learning about another culture, but there was profound appreciation. Her thoughts on the art and color of Mexico illustrate this. As far as textiles go, I believe everything amazing and beautiful comes from Chiapas, Mexico. I love everything about the colorful handmade woven textiles created by women with generations of history behind them. It's truly a region of some of the most talented weavers and embroiderers in the world. And what artist would...
Written by contributing blogger, Christine Martin. Early this month, Children Inspire Design's, Rebecca, was invited to share her design secrets on Project Nursery. Here, you will find an interview series that highlights the nurseries and kid rooms of successful designers, entrepreneurs, and moms. Reflecting your roots through design is a clever and meaningful way to personalize the design of your space. In discussing the inspiration for her boys' room, Rebecca goes into detail about the value of representing their family story through deliberate decor items. Here's a little sample of the Q & A:What did you enjoy most about the design process?Finding used treasures. I’m big on restoring old pieces and finding alternative uses for materials, so when you give...
